No Child Left Behind Legislation
One of the main drivers for changing the science curriculum is the federal NCLB legislation, which is the law of the land. Each state was required to come up with methods of measuring performance, and if adequate yearly progress is not made, there are serious consequences. This puts pressure on schools to improve performance, but should not be used to justify using untested methods that may not work as intended! In fact, the language in NCLB is very specific about being careful to avoid the very mistakes Portage Schools are about to make.
