Science Choices in Midland Public Schools

The italicized text below is taken from the Midland Public Schools website, and in a single concise paragraph it explains the science course choices they offer. Students who don't consider themselves "science whiz kids" can take semester survey courses to touch on all the key topics, while those interested in greater depth and more content can take traditional year-long courses, or advanced level year-long courses.

MPS and PPS are similar-sized districts with Midland having about 10% more students and a somewhat higher overall MEAP passing rate. Midland offers students the same type of choice parents are asking for in Portage (click here). This is an excellent way to meet the varied needs of a diverse student body. Hat's off to Midland for implementing a novel plan that meets the needs of nearly all students!

High Schools

The MPS High School Science Program consists of 3 basic categories of classes. These include Survey Courses (semester topic courses), Traditional Science Courses (yearlong topic courses) and Advanced Courses. A more specific description of these courses can be found below. The graduation requirement for Science is 20 credits or 2 years of course work. The focus of the program is to meet the science education needs for the diverse population of our students, emphasizing the application of scientific process and content in a real work context. Students are given opportunities to develop skills through scientific research, use of computer technology, and rigorous laboratory and classroom experiences. This program is supported with state of the art science and technology facilities at each high school.
