Comment at January 12 School Board Meeting

My name is Bruce Bejcek. I reside at 7072 Hickory Point Drive.

I’d like to address the Board not only as a parent of three students within the Portage Public Schools, but I also am a faculty member of the Biological Sciences department at Western Michigan University, and I teach many of the students that you graduate from your high schools.

I can honestly say that I think this change in the curriculum will not prepare them very well for the courses that they enter into at Western Michigan University.

I know from talking to many of the faculty members up at Western that the students that we get generally have a lack of depth. This new program is not going to prepare them any better. Matter of fact, in my opinion, it’s going to do a worse job than what’s going on right now.

High school students need to get a solid foundation of science if they’re going to enter into the sciences. Obviously, as your mission statement states, you’re trying to prepare them as good citizens, ones who can use innovative complex strategies to solve problems and make decisions in everyday life. They need a factual basis to do so. A limited amount of science education will not allow them to do that. I thank you very much for your time.
